Data Days: A Look at How Data is used at Elementary Schools

Data days at our elementary schools allow teachers to investigate areas of instructional need using data and respond with reading interventions to close gaps. Grades K-1 use FAST benchmark data, and grades 2-5 use MAP data as it relates to school and individual students. The purpose of these structured meetings is to assess data, analyze grade-level trends, and identify students for additional instruction.

Warren H. Meeker: Longest-Serving School Board Member

In March 1912, Warren H. Meeker was sworn in as an Ames School board member for the first time. For the next 33 years, he continuously served the Ames board, 16 of those as president, until his retirement in March 1945. He is the longest-serving member in the history of the Ames School Board.

Thirteen Ames High Students Named National Merit Semifinalists (2022)

Thirteen Ames High School students have been named semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) mailed Certificates of Merit to principals across the country, notifying them of the students who have advanced to Semifinalist standing in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

At tonight’s Special School Board Meeting, the Ames Board of Directors voted to reinstate a mask requirement at all of our school buildings. The mask requirement will go into effect this Friday, September 17, and applies to all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to our school buildings.

Summer School 2021

Summer School 2021

At the Ames Community School District, June 10 was officially the last day of the 2020-2021 school year. For some students, teachers, and staff, they headed back to classrooms on June 14 to engage in summer learning. However, this learning is not like what you might envision as summer school. It’s an environment rich with fun, hands-on, and engaging curriculum unlike any other.  “It is important that summer school doesn't feel like school,” said Anthony Jones, Director of Equity. “Yes, students will be learning and instruction should be targeted based on students' academic goals in reading and math, however, the learning must be fun and engaging.”

Ames Community School District Receives STEM BEST Program Award

Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council announced Ames Community School District’s Science in the City as one of the 22 STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) Program models for 2021. The STEM Best Program supports school-business partnerships that allow teachers and industry professionals to work side-by-side on curriculum and projects that give students actual workplace experience. In the projects, students also gain an understanding of the opportunities and required skills for careers in STEM fields.
