Health and Well-Being

The Ames Community School District supports student success by providing a safe and healthy learning environment and addressing health related barriers to learning. Every school in the district has a dedicated school nurse who can be a primary source of information in student health related matters.

What We Do

  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and provide health care guidance to students and staff.
  • Identify health concerns and provide appropriate care.
  • Medication management.
  • Assists the education team in early identification of learners needing accommodations or specialized instruction.
  • Provide mandated screening, immunization monitoring, and manage student health forms.
  • Help students develop strategies to manage health issues.
  • Provide comprehensive and appropriate health education.

School Nurses

School nursing is a healthcare specialty requiring specific expertise in nursing, public health, and education. Our school nurses are licensed, registered nurses educated to address the wide range of health topics that impact children at school. They are a pivotal role that bridges health care and education so students are safe, healthy, and ready to learn. Parents should make sure their phone number and contact information is up-to-date in Infinite Campus.

For specific medical concerns contact your building school nurse.

Mental Health

Ames CSD is committed to providing our students with the skills to be successful. This commitment includes supporting students’ mental health and well-being. Statistics indicate that one in five students will have a mental health need before they graduate. Half of those students will have their first signs or symptoms before the age of 14.

Students and parents need to know that it’s “OK, not to be OK.” Mental Health issues are very treatable, and success rates improve dramatically when parents and schools collaborate to provide services and a caring environment.

The Ames Community School District supports student success by providing a safe and healthy learning environment and addressing health related barriers to learning. Every school in the district has a dedicated school nurse who can be a primary source of information in student health related matters.
