Nicole Coronado

Coronado Named Principal at Sawyer Elementary

On Monday, April 24, 2023, Nicole Coronado was approved by the School Board as the next Principal of Sawyer Elementary. Coronado, currently an Associate Principal at Ames Middle School, has been with the District for 11 years. Prior to being the Associate Principal at AMS, she was a 4th grade teacher at Sawyer Elementary.

Coronado has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with endorsements in math and English as a Second Language from Iowa State University, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Buena Vista University, and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Iowa State University.

In her role as Associate Principal at AMS, Coronado has overseen the Alternative Learning Program, English as a Second Language department, and was the instructional leader for 7th and 8th grade teachers. She also provided monthly professional development opportunities for staff and worked with families and community members to support the success of students. 

Coronado has been recognized for her work in education in various capacities. She is a two time Dan Woodin award recipient both at Sawyer and AMS, and a 2021 YWCA Women of Achievement Award recipient. She continues to grow in her field by collaborating with professional organizations such as School Administrators of Iowa.

As a District, we are excited to continue to work with Coronado and look forward to her leadership within the Ames CSD. Her new position will officially begin on July 1, 2023.
