About this event
The Ames-Story County MLK Day Celebration Committee is hosting its 4th Annual Essay Writing Contest to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All Ames/Story County area high school students (9th -12th grades) are invited and encouraged to participate.
Students can select one of two Essay Contest options:
1. Choose your favorite Dr. King, Jr. Quote
Contestants are challenged to share how the quote impacts your life, empowers you, and helps to motivate and inspire others in your community to continue his legacy.
2. Dr. King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
Contestants are challenged to explain the significance of his letter and its relevance to the United States today.
“Letter from Birmingham Jail” is Dr. King’s response to a group of white clergies who had criticized his use of nonviolent civil disobedience in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. This letter has been found important throughout history because it expresses Dr. King’s feelings toward the unjust events and is an example of a well-written argument.
Essay deadline is Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023.
