Ames High Senior Eddie Wei Elected to the Key Club International Board
Ames High Senior Eddie Wei was recently elected to the Key Club International Board during a July special meeting held in lieu of the 2020 Key Club International Convention. This year’s convention, planned for San Francisco, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a trustee, Wei will represent the Nebraska-Iowa Key Club District.
Key Club International, a Kiwanis International student leadership program, is a growing organization with thousands of clubs in more than 38 countries. Key Club enables high school students to lead through service and volunteerism. In partnership with local Kiwanis clubs, Key Club members make positive impacts by serving others in their schools and communities. Ames High School Key Club has been in existence since 1989 and included 60 + members during the 2019-2020 school year.
In addition to his four-year membership in Key Club, Wei is a participant in Key Leader, a program that teaches the service leadership and social-emotional skills essential for students to become effective leaders.
Wei has received numerous awards for his outstanding service that include the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor Award and the Nebraska-Iowa Outstanding District Board Member Award.
During his term as club secretary, Wei enhanced communication between officers and members — leading to increased attendance at service events. As a lieutenant governor of an inactive district, he educated club advisors and officers on important news and events. Wei decided to run for office to expand his impact on Key Club members and to experience the life-changing opportunities available to an international board member.
Wei has always had a passion for serving others. Attending a 2019 Key Leader event deepened his passion for serving Key Club. “The program itself was inspiring, but the people that I met made me truly proud to be a part of the Kiwanis family.”
When Wei’s term starts in October, he plans to create new opportunities for members, equip Key Club governors with tools to succeed, and develop deep relationships with service partners. His main goal is to inspire members to have the courage to accomplish great goals.
His experience serving in a smaller district and his dedication to providing creative ideas will bring a different perspective to the international board’s support for all clubs, large and small.
Wei is president of the Ames High School Band and co-president of Ames High School Student Ambassadors. After graduating from high school, he plans to attend a four-year university and study business with a concentration on analytics.
